Caribbean
Islands
Unsophisticated, friendly nature lovers paradise. Come here to trek through the rain forest admiring the birds, butterflies and lush vegetation not for lounging on the beaches or sophisticated entertainments. Also renowned for whale watching all year round but particularly during the winter months.
A relatively undeveloped island and so less easily accessible. Although Canefield Airport is close to the capital, Roseau, it only handles small aircraft. International flights mostly arrive at Melville Hall Airport on the NE coast.
Wetter and more humid than the other Caribbean islands. This gives the island its character - lush vegetation and numerous rivers and waterfalls. The best time to visit is winter and spring which offers the driest weather and the best diving and whale watching.
Generally unsophisticated but friendly and inexpensive. Many are geared to eco-travellers.
Some parts of the island have reasonable beaches but not to compare with many other Caribbean islands.
The steep topography is mirrored below water resulting in indifferent swimming, reasonable snorkelling, and excellent scuba diving. A great diversity of marine life, some rare in other parts of the Caribbean.
