Rocoto Chillies

by Mark Rowland

Capsicum pubescens is a species native to the Andes. The plant is very distinct from the other Capsicum species, with pubescent growth and relatively large purple flowers. It is adapted to much cooler conditions than the other species, and grown in a glasshouse in the dull wet English summer of 2007, it started flowering on July 15th, but did not set until the weather turned even colder in late September. This combined with its rangy growth makes it unsuitable for glasshouse culture.

In spite of Capsicum pubescens having the reputaion for being hardier than the other species, the plants seemed to be equally frost sensitive.
